I have a 660 gas, my problem is that when i start my tractor, it misses and backfires through the carb. I can turn the idle mixture screw all the way in and the machine still keeps running. I resently had the exhaust and intake manifold off, so i'm thinking that the exhaust gaskets are gone and it is drawing air in around the manifold. I am only a back yard mechanic, i have had this tractor for about seventeen years and it has allways worked great. I'm pretty sure that my problem is a easy fix but any advise would sure be appreciated

It could be intake sucking air but I would look to electrical first. It sounds kind of like your points aren't opening all the way,or are burnt. I would try replacing them before I started turning wrenches.

Another thing too, would be a cracked distributor cap.

Arnold,
If you didn"t put new gaskets on after you had the Intake & Exhaust off. I would say it"s not getting the proper air and fuel mixture in the combustion chambers. (starving for fuel) This maybe causing it to backfire. My 2cents. Mike
