Does anyone know at what temp the thermostat for an oliver 1850 (perkins diesel) is supposed to open? I installed a brand new thermostat when i put the engine together. Have had some cold days here in ohio recently. The engine does not seem to get very warm. I installed a live temp gauge (which I checked against a thermometer prior to installing), and the temp does not reach 100 degrees F unless, I cover the radiator. Then the temperature will up get to about 115 degrees F. Is it possible that it is stuck open? or bypassing? Any info is greatly appriciated.

Thanks

I think there is something wrong with that thermostat. It's either bypassing or is open. One thing I would do before changing the thermostat is to work the tractor under load and see if the engine gets to operating temperature.

PS: You can test the new thermostat by placing it in a pan of water and bring the water temperature up on your stove. Use a thermometer
to check when the thermostat opens.

Thanks El Toro. I will definatley test the new one before I put it in. I should have checked the one that is in it before I put it in. Still kicking myself for that. The 115 degree temp was reached with the radiator covered, and under what I guess you could consider a light load (spreading manure in 1st gear about 1,500-1,800 rpm). Thanks again.

If we hooked it to this vehicle I'm sure it would get real hot in a hurry. We used this for fullload drawbar and cooling tests on Army tanks and trucks. Hal

Pulling that manure spreader should get the temperature up. What is the temperature of the
thermostat? Should be at least 180 or better. I use 195 in my car and it gets the car temp nice and warm. Hal

I'm sure trying to pull that thing would definatley get the temp up. I'm not sure what the temp is set at for the thermostat. I currently don't have a book (borrowed my uncle's I&T manual for the engine work). I think that I am going to call Maibach's tomorrow and order the thermostat and a manual. Someone there should be able to tell me what it is supposed to open at. They have always been very helpful.

The thermostat should have the temperature on the sensing bulb of the thermostat. Look it over carefully. Hal
PS; We never used the Heavy Field Dynamometer
on any farm tractor. We did you use it on the Cat D7 Crawler that was profiled in the movie "The Green Beret" being carried by a chopper. It wasn't the same tractor that we tested.
