Engine won't shut off when key is turned off

I just replaced the alternator on my 770. When I had a bad alternator and ran off the battery, the ignition switch would shut the engine off. With the new alternator it won't shut off. I have it wired so the wire off of the stud on the alternator goes to the batt terminal of the switch. The #1 off the alt goes to ignition side of switch and the #2 goes to stud on alternator(batt). What did I do wrong?

My first time I had the same problem replacing Generator with alternator. I installed a light in line were the diode is in the picture by using a push in light socket such as most vehicles use for marker lights. It acts like an indicater light and will be on till alternator runs fast enough to generate power then light will go out. also good way to tell when altrnator stops working.

Here's a GM alternator with that diode installed to prevent battery drainage. Hal

Perchance did you replace the generator with an alternator?

You need a blocking diode. Right now the alternator is backfeeding the distributor via the ignition switch circuit.

Check on this site for alternator conversions, if I remember right a 50V 1A diode will do. Put it in between the ignition switch and the alternator. That will stop the flow of cuirrent from the alternator to the distributor.

When I redid my Allis I installed separate ingintion and alternaotr feed circuits, both for that issue and so I could swap in a mag and use the other circuit as a kill switch with only 1 change of wiring (a feed to a ground).
