Perkins Deisel in an 1850, high speed (2000 RPM and up) no load it has a bad miss, just had pump redone shop said there was a lot of damage inside ($750), had the injectors tested no trouble found, engine runs great under load, have bled the system many times at the injectors and seem to be getting air and when bleeding the air it is sometimes hard to tell if the engine has changed.
Suggestions on how to fix it?
Thanks
Rich

The brass drive gear below the injection pump could be worn causing too much backlash. The backlash plays havoc with the governor, causing a high RPM flutter. Our 1850 had the same problem until we replaced the gear.

We haven't compared the slot in the gear to the flywheel marking, one thing we did notice, if we retard the timing a degree or two it seemed to run better a high RPM no load. We will take a look at the gear and pull the starter to mark the flywheel. Thanks

O. K. I am here and your are there so I have not heard it run or seen the tractor. Let me ask you this and I have no idea how many hours are on the engine. Did you double check the pump timing when you reinstalled the pump? Does it smoke when it misses? If so what color and if it does have you taken the exhaust manifold off to see if the miss stays with one cylinder or if it moves from cylinder to cylinder. Start there first. J.

We checked the fuel pump timing against the flywheel marks, however the marking on the flywheel was very difficult to read, to double check we pulled #1 injector and approximated TDC. It has a little bit of blue haze when it misses. We haven't pulled the exhaust manifold, but we can try that.

I am trying to lead you down the same path as Mr Kuhns. When you had the pump off did you align the slot in the pump drive and then check it against your TDC mark? Also you may need to take the starter off and turn it so the TDC mark is in the starter hole and mark it with some paint or something else so you can see it. I had one one time that all the timing marks lined up and it missed and I had to "flow time it" Come to find out the little splined connector shaft had a samm twist in it. A couple of degrees do make a difference. J.

My 1850 diesel tends to blubber a little at these higher RPMs unless I have a load on it. Running PTO equipment is the only time I get to that RPM. I do most of my work at 1800 to 1900 RPM. Have you looked at your valve springs? Does it smoke and if so what color? How about the line from the tank? My tank shut off valve broke once and did not open all the way causing a restriction. Some of these transfer pumps have a fine mesh screen inside and I've had them get dirty. Air getting in upstream of the injection pump is sometimes a problem after a system has been opened up. Hope it's an easy fix, PK.

We did an in frame overhaul 2 years ago and had the head done, I do not believe they replaced any springs. It is a new transfer pump and filters, but if it was problem with fuel delivery wouldn't the problem be worse under load?

Is the lift pump (the fuel pump on the side that pushes the fuel through the filters) OK?
