How well do the fleetline drivetrains hold up in the 9-10 thousand hour range? I am Looking at S88 Diesel that has over 9000 hours on it, said to be original. I dont mind overhauling the engine, but serious wear in the drivetrain scares me.

I have a 77 that started life as a diesel the 1st owner wore that out doing crop work and repalce it with a 770 gas engine.I have had the 770 engine overhaul twice and the trans has never been touched

This is a political answer. We had some Supers that we reversed the bull gears and bull pinons in when they were 6-7 years old and then we had some that probaly had twice as many hours and the gears were like the day the tractor was built. If the guy will let you do it drain the oil out of the rear end and see how much metal is in the oil. If it has a magnetic drain plug so much the better. Will that many hours on the engine I would also get the oil analysised for sure. My 2 cents worth. J.

John,
Is gear whine on Olivers a good indication of wear? My 66 is very noisy in 6th gear, but overall, I dont think it has excessive hours on it. Is it tru they are all noisy, even when new?

I would say no to both questions.

Oliver redesigned the trans and rear everytime they upgraded the series. Unlike the IH disaster with the 460-560 series. Some pullers are still using the 50-55 series trans. Might not be too many left.

Can't say for sure but from what I have seen on all my Olivers. 2-77 and a S88 all have what seem to be very well built trannys/rear ends and they seem to last and last.

The worst enemy of Oliver drive trains is water running down gearshift lever past defective boot into trsnny

Just my 2 cents worth as well,we've had Olivers around here since 1937,still have 6,oldest is a 39. Only problem we have EVER had with trans or rearend,Dad broke a cog off the bull gear in a 49 66 back in the late 50s.
