Looked at a 77D about a month ago which seemed real nice except that I think the back half was from an earlier 77. Pretty sure it had band brakes when it should have had the disk brakes. Where are the engine codes and where are the rear casting codes and how are they dechiphered??
Thanks

I'm going to assume you're talking about the casting date codes. On the engine it should be on the left side of the engine. It will be a number like 10 5 2. That will stand for Oct. 5, 1952. The same holds true for the transmission casting date. It's located underneath the tranmission housing.

Thanks for the info Sherry. I'll see if I can find the numbers on my 66 tomorrow to get a better idea of where they are and to see if that is original too.

Somebody else will have to answer the code question, but the disc brakes on the 77s began at serial number 347905 which was the first serial number in 1952. The diesel engine became available in 1949 in the 77s so it could very well be original. As for where the serial tag is,we've been debating that on here for a few weeks now. We've about concluded that the tag is on the rear hood support just below the instrument panel on the disc brake models and on the right side of the transmission below the shift, just below the platform on the band brake versions.Hope it helps.

The serial tag on this thing indicated it was a 53, so with the band brakes, it must have been switched out at some point.
