550 Wiring for Alternator Neg Ground

Purchased my 550 a year ago. Wiring is a real mess, but it still started until last week when the starter just stayed on and ran the battery flat. Using jump leads from my car it still turned the starter but no spark at plugs.
Also came without working lights, fuse block, buzzer, fuel gauge, speedometer etc.
I have the 550 generator wiring diagram and a new harness from Korves. What changes do I make to use that harness for an alternator set-up with neg ground? Will those wires be heavy enough gauge? My gauges are original and I think will work.

What do you use the tractor for? Late 550 tractors had an alternator. I would have checked if it was still available if not I would have ordered a wiring diagram and made one up. It is not a hard or bad job. To answer your question is it hevy enough? The answer is no. Now to confuse the issue even more what make an model alternator do you have and if it is a single wire unit sell it to someone. My 2 cents worth. J.

Thanks for your replies. It is a 1958 Gas, no PS. I wil check out make and model alternator. I have asked Korves to advise me too. I use the tractor for all kinds of jobs - moving dirt, lifting rocks, clearing brush, but will use a plow and baler soon too. It has a front end trip loader.

Re: 550 Wiring for GENERATOR! Neg Ground in reply to Chris Van der Vyver, 01-22-2007 06:06:15
Duh!
Turns out I have a generator! So aside of getting the polarities correct at the coil because it is neg. ground, I should be OK.
Are there any other components where I have to reverse the polarity? Gauges?
Thanks again folks.

I'm trying to follow you on this: So your saying you currently have a generator, a Positive ground battery set up, and a Neg. ground coil???

And you are wanting an alternator with negative ground battery set up when all is done?

Sorry. It turns out my battery & GENERATOR (not alternator) are neg ground. This wiring is in a poor state. No other wiring exists except that needed to start her up and charge her. So I am replacing ALL the wiring. Mr Schweibert has suggested sticking to the original pos. ground, by simply following the manual diagram. I will try that and see how I make out, hoping all gauges, warning lights work.
