Does anyone know if the alternator on my 66 Oliver 770 came that way from the factory or is it a conversion. There is no voltage regulator and it is a 12 volt negative ground.

My 1966 770 has an alternator...AND a voltage regulator. 100% original.

On your 770 do you know what the resistance is across the terminals of the coil? Is it a standard 12 volt coil (less than 2 ohms) or a higher resistance coil (more than 2 ohms).

We sold a 770 out of either the last or second last run of the 770 tractors, even had to put a front mounted belt pulley on it for the customer. It had an alternator. All alternators are negative ground as per U. S. goverment interference on equipment that new. If you do not have a regulator you have the later alternator which was furnished for repairs for the orignal alternator which did have an external regulator. This is all from memory, more questions I need to do a little research. J.

I need to replace the alternator, can I replace it with a GM alternator from the late 70s to early 80s.

I don't see why not. At one time we had about 5 or 6 vehicles that took those alternators when the boys were all home. Ten dollars for one in a junk yard, checked it out, new bearings and I had a spare on the shelf.
