i have been looking at an 880 diesel for brushogging and have heard that the 88's and 880's had some problems with pto shafts breaking at the flywheel..is this a common problem or just to much load and abuse?..would be running a 6 or 7 ft on it..thanks for any experiences

I broke my rebuilt motor in pulling a 15 foot bushhog hard to believe but she did rather well with it although the tongue weight is more than plenty. Wasn't cutting anything to heavy but you knew it was back there. My dad sure got a kick out of it he could see from the smoke where I was most of the time!! Love that tractor!!

Probably one of the implements that caused half of the PTO failures that you heard of were the old model 116 side winder John Deere Balers. This was 50+ years ago. The baler did not have a flywheel. They were a shock load. Out of a couple hundred tractors that used that shaft we did not sell more than one a year. Unless you are using your chopper as a chain saw you will not have any problems and your chopper no doubt has a slip clutch. I think you find it is probably one of the best live PTO's on any tractor.

Don't know where you would have heard such a thing. The diameter of that shaft is near the same as the 1850 at 93 horse. A puller that I know has an old 88 dinoing 125 engine hp but says he broke the shaft at around 100hp on the pto dino. You're not going to get that out of a stock 880.

Deene,

I haven't heard of or experienced that problem. 88's, super 88's, 880's were quite popular here and a number are still around and being used. I own two 88's and one Super 88. I am restoring a 1955 Super 88 that was my grandfathers then left the family for a number of years until I bought it back. I did replace the PTO shaft, coupling, and clutch hub due to wear on the splines. The set screw in the coupling was missing and had allowed play on the shaft. This tractor had 10,000 hard hrs. on it so I don't think that was too bad.

New and used parts are plentiful for these models and are pretty reasonably priced.

Were you the one asking about Keck Gonnerman tractors awhile back? Did you see the info I left for you?

I haven't heard of the problem you mention. I've been using a 9' pull type Bush Hog on my 880 gas for several years, including chopping corn stalks, which is a pretty good pto load, and haven't had any problems.
