I got an Oliver 1655 it has some problems. I did a compression test to it getting this on each cylinder.
1 160
2 160
3 165
4 155
5 170
6 165
Looks like it has good compression in this motor. The reason I did it because it sounds like on cylinder is stuck. I guess the engine it is not stuck. So then I did complete tune up and timed it. Still not a difference. Over hauled the carb. Still no difference still sounds like junk. Then my dad looked at it said it is grounding in the distributor before it is getting to the points making sound like junk. When you first try to start it just cranks over and over and that is all. I got a Holley distributor with out the vacuum on it. What do I do? I am in a pickle right now with this tractor. Another question is anybody knows where to get a distributor cap? Anybody got a part number? I always buy my Oliver parts at my Agco dealer. The cap $46.00 and it keeps getting higher in price. So can anybody help me out?

Thanks

Just an outside chance. Unless you are sure the distributor is naff, it might just be worth checking which cylinder is off and then checking the valve lift on that cylinder. You may have a worn lobe.

Hook a dwell meter to your distributor and check your dwell. I don't know what the spec is but it should read pretty steady. My guess is that your dwell is going to be all over the place. I had the same thing with my 1655 a few years back. Holley distributor was shot and no parts available. I put in a new Mallory distributor and it was a totally different tractor. It was spendy though I believe the distributor was close to $300. Good luck.

I'm with Joel on this one. Once you are sure it's the distributor giving you fits, I'd bite the bullet and replace the Holley.

I would try another coil on it first. It sounds like a weak coil to me.

I hear ya on the caps. Paid more than that last fall for my 1750.
Without the advace working, when you set the timing, did you set timing at pto speed or by the book?

napa has caps around $30.00, some guys switch holleys to petronix (breakerless) providing the diaphram is not ruptured, Mallory makes a replacement dist. I have seen GM hei dists. out of 250 chev. 6 cyls. adapted to Olivers,I know it is not hard to do on an 88
