Old Oliver Tractor ???

Back in the mid '50's I worked for a pretty large farmer named John Jessen just north of Pine Bluff, Wyoming. He had a bunch (15-20) of tractors (most red - TD-14s, etc.) He had one smaller Oliver that I just had a ball running. I am almost positive it had a 3-53 Detroit engine in it. I don't remember the model it was. I remember it was a pulling little dude when hooked up to a spike harrow. The little darling was very responsive, with quick governor action and a kind of screaming sound that was music to me. Can anyone tell me what model it may have been? I would be interested in buying one if my billfold will stand it. I'm in central Oklahoma. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks !!

Although I tend to agree you are most likely looking for a Super 99 GM or 990 with the 3-71 GM diesel the other possibility would be a 1900 model series with a 4-53 GM diesel. For the sake of you billfold lets hope you are looking for a 1900 model series because you can get them for less than half the price of a Super 99 GM and they are easier to find. I suggest you go the "Tractor Photos" section on this web site and search for photos of each of those models and take a look. There are some excellent photos and they are all distinct enough you will know witch one you are looking for when you see it. Good luck.

Thanks to all that replied. Was there any other Oliver of that vintage that could have had a 3-53 in it? I really remember it as a 3-53 instead of a 4-53 or a 3-71. I had a hankering, at the time, to put one (3-53) in an old Chevy or Ford. Any other with a 3-53? Thanks a bunch. bob f.

I think 3-71 Fan has it right- Super 99 GM had the 3-71, then the 4 digit replacements (1900 then 1950) had 4-53's. I don't believe there were any other Detroit powered Olivers, and none with a 3-53. I still remember seeing (and hearing) a 4-53T powered Chev pickup at a service station in the late 70's, just before the automakers brought out their diesel pickups. I talked to the guy, and he said the performance was adequate, but not as good as the snarly sound would lead you to expect. He thought anything less than the 4 cylinder with turbo would have been too limp to be of much use.

That would have been a Super 99 GM, I think, and if you want one, I hope your billfold is a whole lot healthier than mine. The pullers just love those little darlin's, and your well into 5 digits now, for a good one.

The Super 99's are all great but I'm a big fan of the 990's. I pull one of those bad boys with the awsome 371 Detroit, now thats a pulling machine!

Most guys prefer Super 99 GMs. I have a buddy that likes the 990 because he thinks they are cleaner and smother looking. I'm curious, why do like the 990s?
