Does anyone have any info on rebuilding a 4-270 engine? What problems did you encounter and the like. How do these engines and the tractor perform in general? Thanks

Barry, I'm responding to the second part of your question.
I have purchased 3- 560's in the past 8 years. All the engines were junk. One had a broken crank, another cracks in the block between cylinders and head and the other was damaged beyond fixing by a sandlotter. The 560 is a good tractor like all the cockshutts. The 4-270 engine has a weakness that other perkins engines did not have in general. It has only 3 mains for the crank.
It appears that a number of 560's if not properly maintained and watched had cranks break because of overheating due to a leaking power steering unit that assisted in plugging off air flow through the radiator. I've been told that a 560 with proper maintenance, etc. could acquire 10000 hours without any major problems, however, if not watched thoroughly could become a major problem earlier than expected. My plans are to re-power with cummins when we get the funds and the time for making a new adapter plate and newly configurated p.s. unit.
It appears that the 4-270 was not one of the best in the Perkins line.
My 2 cents worth.

Thanks, My book explains the crank process. What causes these blocks to crack like this? The spare engine I aquired has 2 small cracks between the close sleeve sets. Also this assembly had a hole the size of a quarter broke out of the head beside and under one valve spring.Weird!!!

No I do not have a kit located.I do have a lot of engine know how but limited on diesels.I have a service manual for this engine. My concerns are, I bought this machine tore down,it hade spun no.2 rod bearing, and the block has a small crack between no.1 and 2 sleeves but it is only as deep as the top lip of the sleeves. I have another crankshaft and 4 rods, but is this block junk? Thanks

From your description I would say the block is O. K. Seeing it is better. I have a Perkins Bulletin on grinding those cranks. It is a little different process than just chucking it up in the crank grinder and having at it.

How much diesel experience do you have. I would not do an inframe. I would set all the piston heights within 0.005, the valve recession within 5 also if I was doing the work and I would ballance the rotating assembly. Do you have a "kit" located?
