A while back I asked here for recommendations for a few book titles on Oliver tractors/history. I appreciate the response I received. I have a budget, so have to be careful. I took a stab at ordering a couple and here's where I ended up: Got Larry Gay's little softcover, "A Guide to Hart-Parr, Oliver and White Farm Tractors." Modest price, horizontal format (which I dislike), medium quality photographs, nicely done. Not a bad little book; glad I got it. Next I kept hearing about Wendel's book as such a sought-after standard that I looked around for it. Discovered it was in print again, softcover. I ordered it. Right after that someone on this forum reported that the quality was not as good as the original book and while Wendel did great back then, new info was now available and the book was not as much a complete standard reference as it was once considered. That guy was right. I cannot comment on how complete and thorough Wendel's work is, but I can say this reprint is a very, very poor product in a mechanical sense. ALL photogrpahs and graphics are very dark and muddy; so much so, detail that was probably good in the first book is unusable in this one. For a book selling for $25 to $29, it is discouraging. Had I been able to see it before buying, I would have skipped it entirely. There is still a lot of information in it, however, "kp books," did a dis-service to the buying public with this one.

Now trying to decide what Oliver book to risk buying next.

Dennis

Thank you both. I just checked into the two titles...and it might take a while to find them by the looks of things. One was listed around $75 which is out of my budget for now. But it's important to know what are good books and I'll keep digging for them. Meanwhile, the library isn't a bad idea at all.

Hi Dennis , You might try the Floyd County Museum also . The # is 641-228-1099 . The link is below . They sell books on Oliver as well as manuals and such . Price may be more than a bookstore but it goes to support the museum . Happy Reading ! ...Randy

these will apply in different ways, but both are EXCELLENT Oliver books. You got 2 of the better ones for sure, but these two will both them out of the water;)

The Tractor Builders by John D. Culbertson. This book here is for the person really hardcore Oliver looking to learn about the Charles City plant. I tend to like my books with pictures, but this 500 page book is great eventhough you have to read almost all of it.

Oliver Farm Tractors by T. Herbert Morrell and Jeff Hackett
This book is more pictures, like Larry Gay's, except hardcover. Mr. Morrell worked at the plant and he wrote a heck of a good book. It does get a little light on the 4-digit series Olivers, but most of the books tend to fade off by then(which I hate). These along with Mr. Wendells book are my top 3. Try these two if you like, I like them alot myself:)

If you like the first Culbertson book, then also "The Tractor Builders", a second book by Mr. Culbertson is a great read.

For bookaholics or those trying to fill out their library on a budget (join the club!) your local library (or your friends)may have the books you're thinking about, and you can see what they're like before sending off for a copy.
