Hello! A friend of mine in Southern IL has a 77 diesel that needs new energy cells in the head. It has been awhile since I had them apart, and I forget: are there three components...or four? What is the cost of these parts? Are they available aftermarket, or only from AGCO? Are they available as a complete "kit" for each cylinder? Any input would be helpful. Thank you!

Merlin, i think you will find that the energy cells will be ok with a good cleaning. Never seen one actually go bad before. If, by chance, you do need any, let me know, i got about a dozen of those old 77 heads and for the cost of shipping i would be glad to help you out.

Merlin: You will not like my answer. They were expensive 30+ years ago. Now what is the matter with your energy cells? We probably had enough tractors around here that if you took all the enegy cells out and put them on a pile there would be over a thousand of them. I only ever saw one or maybe 2 that were bad. See now why they are going to be expensive and not available in the aftermarket. J.

Hello, J! Thanks for the reply! The old 77 is hard to start. It was just overhauled, including a proper valve job. I remember one time rebuilding a Minnieapolis-Moline M5 Diesel with the same energy cells. They were badly eroded, and I had to replace the pintles (nozzles) and cups. It ran about $100.00 per cylinder...back in 1991! I can imagine they are even higher today. I will have to pull them out and look at them. Thanks again!
