Oliver 770 questions

I have never owned an Oliver, and only drove one a slight amount, but I have always liked the 770 model. I know of one at a dealer here in Minnesota for sale, that is an early type, gasoline, with the rounded fenders. The hydra-power, which I understand is similar to IH's torque amplifier, is suspect, according to the salesman. Is it possible to just run the tractor as a six-speed, and simply not use the hydra? I would just use it for light work, like grain drilling, harrowing, etc, anyway. Conversely, how expensive is it to fix this problem, approx? Any advice on this model, and what to look for, is appreciated.

Thanks for the comment, OSB. I was looking at production figures for this model, and supposedly it was manufactured from 1958 until 1970, is that correct? It seems to me, at least, that this model would have been very close in horsepower with the 1600, and the later 1550 models.....was the 770 promoted as an "economy" tractor at the time, being it was sold, as I understand it, until the very late 1960's? Finally, were there any significant engineering changes made on these models when they went to the updated styling and square fenders?

1958 to 1967. Book rates them at 45 horse, but a set of M&W's and a good valve job gets you 60+ easy. Yes if you don't "play" with the engine, they are easy on the gas bill. Changes that came along....PS, Better RE gears after 1958. Later on, alternator..etc....I believe the flat top fenders came out in 1962, when they quit the 880 for the 1600, but don't quote me on this...Excellent runners!

I have an 880 with the same problem. You can drive it with the power booster stuck as far as I know. You are particularly OK if it is stuck in the high range. I"m not sure of the exact cost yet, but fixing it is labor intensive as I have torn mine completely apart this winter. They are a good tractor and welcome to Oliver.

Mike
