I am building a puller using an 88 engine. I am stroking the crank 1 inch and I intend to use 77 rods as they have an 2 inch journal diameter and that will allow a longer stroke. I will use small block Chevy pistons and bush the rod to fit the piston pin. Some have said just to use the Chevy rods, replace the small end with a big block small end, and work the crank to fit them. I prefer NOT to cut and weld a rod unless it is absolutley necassary. By using the 77 rods i will have the longest rod possible for the stroke i am using. I know I will have to notch the cam and the block.. may even have to window the block; but nothing a grinder and time won't take care of.
Do you forsee a problem with the rod choice??
I am not looking for a "monster motor", just a big engine..about 450 to 490 cubes....or there about.

I know of a few people that have used the stock 77 rods without any problems. If you want a stronger rod use the 77 diesel rod. Or get the rods you have harden. About Rockwell 35 will do the trick. This will make them alot stronger but you will have to get them refinished after the heat treat.
