Hello there:

I am usually busy watching the Farmall side of life, but a friend of mine asked me to take a look at an Oliver for him. The tractor is a 550 utility model with an adjustable wide front. It comes with an Oliver brand front end loader and has a back scraper blade of unknown origin....the tires are in very good shape, I can't see any obvious major leaks etc...It looks like most of the tin is in good shape. My question is, is $3500 for such a beast a decent enough price? What kind of HP would it have? It looks to have a 4 cylinder engine and be a gas model, and there is no PTO guard on the tractor. Is there any items we should look for as problem spots? It is covered with a little snow here in northern MN right now, so a close look isn't likely for a little while. Any advice or help would be welcomed!

Hello, I live in Northern MN (East Grand Forks) and own a 550 tactor. It has a loader and has been a great tractor for me. Are you in EGF too?? Where is this tractor located??? I do not need another one, but the reason I ask is that I saw one sitting by a business the other day, Had an Oliver loader and a back blade on it, it looked OK, but I saw a lot of modifications on it. No for sale sign on it, but just curious if it is the same machine. Was sitting by the old Pizza Hut. As stated earlier, check out Shep's article, it is what I used when buying. Click, Under Research & Info, Articles, Maintenance and Mechanical info, 550 purchaser checklist. E-mail me with a phone number if you need more info.

Wow, what a small world! Yes, I do live in East Grand Forks, and that is the exact tractor that they are looking at. I guess that they know the owner and want to get one for the hunting shack maintenance. I wouldn"t know much of what should be on that old girl, but it looked like a decent enough one to start with. You couldn"t hardly buy anything new and comparable for close to that money!

Yes small world, I was surprised too. I checked the serial number, under clutch pedal on left, and it appears to be a 1961. OK, I am no expert, but was in town today and here are the pros and cons I saw on it. Pros: nice tires, newer battery, vickers remote hyd. valve (right side of seat, very rare and sought after sell for about $400), rear wheel weights (inside), rear tires filled with liquid, front pump for loader (front pump is faster than running off of tractor hyd.) fluid appears to be contained in loader frame, easy access separate filter, engine oil looked new, clutch pedal still has 'nubs' on it so 4400 hrs on tach may be acurate??, PTO lever appeared to work and snapped back into place, tin looked good, 4 lights ugly but functional.
Cons: The PTO inspection cover has a fluid leak, it is a dry clutch system and should not have a leak there, read Shep's article for more detail. This would be a concern and I had the same problem with mine when I bought it, had to replace all PTO clutch plates. Tractor looks like it has sat outside its whole life, has been poorly repainted, most hyd hoses old and cracked, muffler rerouted, oil pan banged up, no Power Steering, front axle stops have been welded, gauges broken, generator not original, fuel filter and shut off valve not original, coolant heater is just plain ugly.
Over all if it runs good I think $3500 is a fair price. I paid around $6000 for mine, but it is in much better original condition, a 1974, and I purchased from a dealer. All of these lead to a higher price. I sold a 8n with a loader last year for $2600. The Oliver is a much better tractor with more HP, live pto, live hyd. If they could get the price down a bit more it would be a great deal, especially if it is a hunting shack tractor. Hope this helps. Luke Millette

Thanks a bunch for that good advice! I printed it off and passed it on to the guy who was looking. I guess his brother has seen and heard it run and it sounds and works good, so I wouldn't be surprised if they went for it. It was nice finding some other tractor buffs up here too! Have a great weekend!

There's an article over in the Research and info page written about what to look for when looking at a 550. It's called 550 purchase checklist. It was written by ShepFl it's a pretty good article of what to look for overall.
I've got a Super 55 which is the earlier model of the 550 and I love it as an all around utility tractor.
