What is the function of the casting that is right above the left brake housing on the 1550? Was it supposed to be for a spin-on filter? It's about 3 or 3 1/2 inches in diameter. A raised ring around the edge and a hole in the center, maybe 1/2", that looks like it might be threaded. It looks like it has never been used for anything.

Dean or Mr Starr can probably tell you for sure, but it is not a 100% the same but they told us at a meeting one time that it was a basic 1650 casting with out on the machining for the 1650 for the pressure lube since the 1550 has a spur gear transmission. Since it is a spur gear unit, pressure lube is not necessary. Also FYI that is why the oil level pipe plug has the pipe elbow, nipple and cap on it. Does that help?

Interesting and helpful comments here. On my 1550, J.S., the level plug you say has the pipe elbow and cap,is different. The previous owner has a bolt with a, "hood," under the head dropped in that vertical piece of pipe. Such that it could, "breath." I wonder if he worried about capping off a wet chamber he viewed as under pressure? So I could probably put a pipe cap back on there and have one more barrier to dust invasion. Dennis....still learning everything possible about his new 1550....
