I have a chance to buy two different tractors for my daughter to use on her small piece of land, and I am looking for advice on which one to buy. I will be buying one of these tractors sight unseen because I currently live in New Mexico, and the tractors are in central Missouri. Here is a description of both:

8n ford with a 5' bush hog, and blade. I asked the dealer if he has checked out this tractor and he said.. "nope, and I'm not going to, it runs, and the lift works, and the breaks work, backed up, and drove it off the trailer and parked it" The next day I asked him if it had anti-freeze in it and he said.. "I guess it does" the price on this tractor with the attachments is $2750

the other tractor:

Oliver 1600 with a end loader, and this dealer said: "has good tires, hit the button and she starts right up, everything works and I think i got a used brush hog for ya too". Very nice guy sounds like he is around 90 years old. The price on this tractor is $2500 and the used brush hog is going to be.. "around $250"

I see a lot of information on the 8n, but hardly nothing on the oliver 1600.
All advice will be greatly taken on this.

Thank you

If you read this, I know I'm behind, I have an uncle in central MO that sells used tractors. Some years ago he started with the small Ford's and learned after so many years that they are worn out, as in, most of what he sold he had call backs on customers wanted him to fix things that went wrong long after they bought them. He won't even put them on the lot noe because of this, he will buy them only for parts. The live p.t.o. would sell me on the Oliver those Ford's can be dangerous. Just my two cents, good luck!!

Thanks everyone for the information, my daughter and I have talked and we are going to wait until she gets there in the spring. The land she is buying is 10 acres, pretty level land..

How small is her small piece of land? I have 10 acres and I have a Oliver 1265. This tractor fits my land great. Not to big and not to small. Size wise it's just a bit bigger than the 8n but not by much. The 1600 would be way to big for what I need and for my land. This is something that you need to consider. What all will she be using it for. If she needs to get into tight spaces then that 1600 may be to big, but if she needs lots of power and space is no concern then the 1600 would fit the bill.

OK, I messed up a little bit. According to the serial number log on this Site, the 1600s were built from 1962 thru 1964. Still, 10 years newer than the newest 8N.

Oh yeah - another comment. The 8N will be AT LEAST 53 years old!! I don't know when the 1600s were build, but from the photo in Don-WI's response I would guess that model was built in the late 1960-1970 time frame thus making it AT LEAST 20 years NEWER than the 8N.

I don't know anything about the Oliver 1600, but I do have an 8N that I use a lot for pulling a trailer, plowing the garden, misc. odd jobs, etc.

It is difficult to give you an opinion without, as Randy-IA noted, knowing more about your intended use for the tractor. But I can tell you that that a tractor with a live pto and live hydraulics will work circles around one without those features. The 8n does NOT have either of those features! The quoted price for the 8N with the attachments is about right for central Ohio, so if the Oliver is 30hp more than the 8N, as another responder stated, then the Oliver sounds like a much better deal. Make sure the Oliver has a 3-point hitch.

The 1600 is a very well built and reliable tractor, and is the predesesor to the 1650, 1655, and White 2-70. The 1650 and 55 are considered Oliver's best by most, and if it wasn't for the 1600 they wouldn't be around. Same basic tractors, but with very few improvements like air filters, (oil bath vs. dry element) Horse power, and some different but very minor things. A good deal of parts are interchangeble between all 4 models.

$2500 for a runnning 1600 with a loader is a deal and I'd jump on it. The only thing about the 16, is if it's a gas it can get a little thirsty but it'll work 10 times harder than a little 8n ever could.

Kinda biased, here's my 1600... third party image

The other tractor is a Massey 285. The 285 is rated about 25-30 HP more than the 1600 when new, but I put in an overbore kit to bring it up to 1655 specs. Still rated for less than the 285 but it runs the blower SO much better and can handle more.

Chuck; Sounds like the dealer is out for a fast buck with the 8n. Seems a dealer should at least know if the anti freeze is good.

The Oliver is a private sale? If you are going to use a loader you will want power steering. And live pto for the bush hog. The 8n has neither power steering or lpto.

It will mean more bucks and a newer tractor mabe to get what you want.

Where do you live in NM. We live in rural Las Cruces. e-mail should be open.

Personaly , I'd rather be taken by someone with a smile ;') . Seriously , Can't you find any tractors nearer to you ? I think we nead more info about the size of the acreage and it's general location , what's expected of the tractor , etc. A 8n is a pretty small tractor and a 1600 is a good step up from that ( about 27 PTO to 57 pto HP ) . 8n would be cheaper and easier to transport is all . My money would go to the 1600 for sure since it's got a loader and is less expensive for a MUCH more versitile tractor . If it needs repair though it'll cost more also ...Randy
