88 Hydro Pump Rebuild--Side Plate Question

How much can the side plates on an 88 hydro pump be ground to make smooth? A local hydraulic repair shop tried lapping the side plates but couldn't get all of the wear out of the plate.

Before I take it to a machine shop for a real grinding, I want to make sure there isn't a point where the side plates are worthless if ground too much.

Kerwin,
The endplate must be ground enough to clean up the wear and they should be lapped before assembly. You need to be able to install the bearing without it interferring with the snap ring on the gear. The manual states the bearing should be loacted 3/32" below the surface of the plate for clearance.I have ground some plates a number of times.
Any more questions?

Nick
