Hi I am thinking about either a 2255 or a 2-180. Any views on which is best? Do they use the same engine and tranny etc? Which would be best value? Are both normally reliable or have they known weaknesses.

If you are going to fix it up and look at it, get the 2255. If you are going to farm with it, get the 2-180 as it will have a transmission and rear end that will handle the power of the Cat V/8. There is no comparison as to the dependability of these two tractor models.

I heard of a 2-180 FWA that a guy in my neck of the woods could buy around 8500. That really looks cheap compared to what some 22's are going for now. I hope he buys it so I won't have to think about it. Dean, why did they stick with the outboard planatarys on that model and not the inboards like the 135/155's and later 185 ?

The 2-135 2-155 design with the inboard brakes and planetaries was not ready for production when the sales department thought they needed the 2255. The 2255 design was a band aid approach which utilized the existing production pieces plus the outboard planetaries that we purchased from Clark. Other companies used that same basic Clark outboard planetary unit. JI Case is one that comes to mind.

Actually the 2-180 did use inboards now that I think about it. Boy oh boy, what will it be like when I get old! Hope I won't be typing then to show everyone how a mind can go.

Both good tractors if you don't mind the 3208. There is some improvements on the 2-180 some of which are more HP,wet brakes(a big improvement),and a nicer cab. Of course the 2255 is more collectable for us diehards.
