I have recently bought an OC 6 and can't figure out how to shift into the lower gears. The pattern shows 2 areas, the upper has the higher gears, the lower pattern has the lower gears. Any trick to getting into the lower gears?

If the gear shift boot is bad and the trans. has had a lot of water in it the ident balls could be rusted. If so it will shift realy hard from the top to bottom gears. I have a 66 that way and the guy next door has an 88 that way also. I feel for the center and pop the shifter real hard. I have found that after I use the tractor for a day or two it works good, if you leave it set a month or so it shifts hard again. I bought a good used set of slide rods but they are still on the to do list.

hi jim,
i have a 1953 gas oc-6
when i first got mine it shifted very hard
also.
the ball detents on the shifting shafts get stuck
and the springs pushing on the ball also can break
making shifting near impossible.
a good complete cleaning of those areas will fix any problem and it will shift like a dream.

Lucky guy what a nice crawler.Anyway you should feel a sweet spot in the pattern right in the middle of it try to pull down.Should not take too much force,unless shifter was removed from the rails.How badly is the machine wore?
