I just finshed rebuilding my power stearing pump and the Gemmer powerstearing unit. The owner"s manual says to use 10W oil or type A transmission fluid. Wouldn"t regular powerstearing fluid work? Anybody have any thoughts?

Rebuilt my power steering unit, it had some scars, started a little leaking after 500 hours, I've been putting regular hydraulic oil in it to slow the leaks down. We ran regular motor oil in our Super 77 but it had an automobile pump mounted on the side it steered just fine! May have to go to motor oil if the leak gets worse. Good luck!

I am going ot have to go into my Gemmer unit on my 1800 soon. I have heard that all i have to do is adjust the slop out of it but just in case I do have to rebuild it can you give me an idea of about how much it costs and what is involved?

Jeff,
I can"t remember the cost on mine 15 yrs ago. There are a lot of o"rings, seals, and a ton of small parts.

I know the dealer I went too for parts, when I mentioned what I was working on I thought he was going to grab his coat and head for home. There is a awful lot of parts and o"rings, seals to look up.
But I was surprized they had everything I needed.
Maybe you will get lucky and all yours will need is to adjust the trunion.

I had my doughts on assembling it back together right. I had fun trying to get the valve actuating lever to work right. Very sensitive setting it.
Good luck. Mike

Jeff,

I'm not the expert, but I had both the pump attached to the generator rebuilt and unit for $300. I don't know if that is a good price or not. That includes parts and labor. My understanding is the "O" rings fail and cause problems. If you look in the parts book, there are a ton of seals and rings. Good luck.

Mike

Thanks guys, I am hoping i don't have to rebuild it and only have to adjust the slack out. I do know when you jack the front end up or get it in mud it turns alot easier...LOL!! If most of it is matching O-rings and such it shouldn't be too bad as I have had to replace one in it when i first got the tractor. Shop I work at has a huge selection of O-rings. Gotta get the motor striaghtened out first them gonna tackle steering

Mike,
I been using tranmission fluid in my 880. I believe it's type A that Im using? Was the same fluid that the the JD 317 LGT used in there Hydrostatic drive till they went to a low ash Hydraulic fluid. I rebuild my Gemmer Gear unit 15 yrs ago and I see the seals are starting to again.
I think dexstron lll will be ok too. Type A getting hard to get. Just my 2 cent.
Mike
