1550: need seat, Oliver Decals best source?

Finally ready to order a replacement seat for my 1550. I have what I suspect is the original Bostrom seat with hydraulic shock. Bottom is actually OK; in black. Back is just a skin of old foam.

I think someone here once suggested Oliver Decals in Iowa as a good source as their white color seats were pleated like the originals. Is this still a good recommendation? I'm caught between just ordering a seat back from somebody and getting along with black (non-stock?), or just breaking down and ordering the whole thing that looks nice. I am also drawn somewhat to the three piece that has the second, higher back support. I suspect these were NOT Oliver original configurations, but I see some advantage in terms of safety and comfort for this old guy.

But they are pricy at $225. Will they bolt right into the original Bostrom?

Opinions appreciated. Thanks, Dennis

There are dozens of places to buy seats and decals. You have to choose what and where you want to spend your money.

But since you"re asking:

If I were buying decals or the three piece high capacity seat you are talking about for a tractor that I was going to keep and use I would buy from Dumont Decals in Iowa for these three reasons: Superb Quality, Excellent Customer Service, and their commitment to preserving the Oliver history. They have a wonderful museum full of Oliver tractors and memorabilia and that means something to me. They"ve always treated me great.

Oliver Decals, site, that includes Dumont Museum: in reply to AB, 11-24-2006 15:23:00
It was suggested to me that Dumont Decals was a great place to deal with. I had the site name, "Oliver Decals," bookmarked, and they have a portion of their site labeled as Dumont Museum and evidently their name is Dumont.

Has to be one in the same place, right?

Is the 3-piece seat not like the original Oliver in that it has the third, upper support? Anyone use that one?

Thanks,
Dennis

Most tractors used just the backrest. The upper backrest is what I call a luxary item. The upper backrest just uses two brackets that bolt on the backrest. For tall guys like myself sitting in that saddle all day they are a plus for back relief.

Jerry Stairs at AgParts First(also highly recommended)sells the upper backrest brackets and all cushions if you want to go that route. He also has all the parts for your boostrom seat configuration. (shock absorber, rollers, etc.)

AB, thanks for the comments. However, I am now a bit confused (which would clear up I'll bet if/when I call Dumont), about the seat parts. Does this mean the $225, 3-piece from Dumont is an ENTIRE seat assembly, all bolted together, that replaces my current seat? What I need to look right is a white, pleated seat bottom that would bolt to my present seat frame, likewise for back, and the 3rd, upper piece, should I choose that too. (More back support is important for me because I have some lower back trouble anyway).

I was looking to buy 2 (or 3) pieces. Unbolt each individual piece of mine and install the new stuff, one section at a time. I have uphostry wear-out problems, not seat frame or function problems.

Hope I'm not making a mess out of these questions.

Dennis

You can call Dumont's at 641622-2592 to answer your questions.

You said you might want to keep your bottom seat cushion as is. I was stating that if you wanted to replace only the backrest or wanted to buy the brackets for an upper backrest or needed a shock absorber AgPartsFirst has those items individually.

Thanks, that clears it up. in reply to AB, 11-25-2006 05:37:16
Sounds like a good idea. I should be able to take it from here.

I appreciate the help and patience.

I don't know if anybody actually sells the entire seat, frame and all anymore unless they've got a core return type deal so they can re-build them. I have one such seat that could use a few new torsion springs, but from what I have heard, they can be had from AGCO yet, which kinda surprizes me.

I got my decals for myt 1600 from Dumont's, and the seat cushions from Ag Parts First. My 1600 has a different style seat, more like what was on the later 880's and such, and was originally a black pleated vinyl. The replacements were just that and cost about $125 if I remember right. Never had to buy a new cushion for our 1855 yet, although I did swap out the bad seat frame with that from our 1755 (blown engine) this summer.

Both places are great guys to deal with, and both have good products. I know Ag Parts gets their seat cushions from Hy-capacity (from the sticker that was on mine), so if it's a matter of price or quality, ask Dumont's where their seats come from. So far I'm very pleased with the quality of the seat cushions on my 1600.
