I'm still out searching for one last suitcase bar for our 1755 and last Sunday I went for a drive to an old Oliver dealership off of I-94 in Wisconsin....one I was referenced too even. I show up at this place, which is basically a big slavage yard, but I find the owners daughter and brother home, so I state my case and what I am in search for. The brother says that he is sure his brother would be okay with me looking, but to of course present what I find and for him to say how much for it. Low and behold in a massive pile of metal, I find a weight bar! I was so excited, but soon after that brother is saying, oh we best see if we can get ahold of him. About a minute later one of his sons shows up and he was to the same tune- dad has to okay the sale....but keeps hinting its NOT for sale. We visit for 2 hours or so, with my girlfriend waiting in the truck(god bless her soul) and he even takes me to another farm where they have a 1750 with a factory two post rops. We chat away and I leave with knowning that they know of ATLEASE 4 bars on their place.....I call them back today and the old man wont even consider parting with ONE! I cannot believe that someone that didnt even know they had this part wouldnt part with it, especially since they have multiple.....I dont know.....just feel like you do all this footwork, take some leads and find what you want, and then have your hands stomped on at the end. SO..... the search continues for a weight bar....

Here is a different spin on what happen to you. I had spotted a Oliver trailer type plow in a field near Hudson, WI. It was near one of the many small villages in the area. One day I had my bincolars with me. It was in a field about 300 yards out. I stopped on the county road, stood on the shoulder of the road and scoped it out. It was not too long before I had company. Seems like the owner of the land where the plow was at thought he owned the road and could tell anyone what to do if someone stopped like I did. The farmer was not friendly at all or willing to listen that he did not own the road or ditch. Now I just drive and remember where the machines sit and try to find the owner of the land so there is no getting shouted at while legally standing on the road or ditch. And never drive onto property if you do not know the owner. .

This must be a Wisconsin thing about getting overprotective over their property;) No way anyone should get lip for looking over a persons property from a road, though. I believe I know where this dealership is in Wisconsin thats talked about, and I dont ever remember seeing a no trespassing sign on their lot. From my experiences, and implement lot is typically an "everything is for sale" type of lot. My recommendations to this dealership that if its not all for sale, fence off "what not for sale, or what they dont want looked at" and then that got a legal reason behind people not looking. Maybe even gate the whole lot off, if thats what it takes. A salvage lot is a totally different game- their whole market is salvage, and everyone knows that parts is a very good market. I agree with Carlton, best not driving onto peoples' properties if you dont know them. You wish you could assume, but assuming makes enemies sometimes. Good luck in your weight bar search.

Never,ever go wandering around a farm,parts yard,
etc without the owners permission as this will just about guarantee a problem and an 'attitude'
from the owner. I have over 150 sets of rear weights and various front and side weights and almost none are for sale as they are better than money in the bank because they are worth more all the time.Whether something is for sale and at what price is exclusively the decision of the owner.

To Cathy and Bill- I dont feel as though I am at all cutting you down- this was mearly a story of a days trip on a long, long search for a weight bar- which of course continues(to a degree this post was made to see if anyone would have happend to have bar that reads this). I had a very nice time chatting with everyone, and if I come around the area again, I'll stop in- I always enjoy a good visit. As for why I looked around for a little bit before coming to the house, I was looking at different implements I hadnt seen before. Very rarely do we see some of those items like the corn planters in Minnesota. I agree with you Dave, it does pay off more to call ahead and such, but my girlfriend and I went on a spur of the moment trip, and while up there, we visited other local shops as well. I appreciate your guys' time, and I do agree, anything of value I would hang onto. Since Sunday I have picked up a few more leads on bars too, so who knows, maybe my search is almost over!

Let me start off by saying that I am the daughter in reference to the letter above. First, I do not work at the business, so I do not know what we have on the lot. Second, my uncle is visiting from Florida and has little knowledge of what is on the lot. I had noticed a truck pulled into the driveway and proceeded to drive into the lot (without permission) around the back of the buildings. Approximately 30 - 45 minutes later, he came to the house and asked about the parts. I told him it was okay to look around but I did not know if we had anything like that and even if we did, he would have to call on Monday to speak to my father. We told him several times that he needed to call and speak to my father. Only after he was around for awhile did my brother show up. My brother was nice enough to walk around and talk about the parts and tractors. NEVER at anytime did we ever say that everything is for sale. Just because we have multiple parts does not mean that we are required to sell them. We restore tractors and frequently use the parts on the lot for this purpose. Thank you 66oliver660 for your response, you stated it perfectly.

It seems to me that Mr. Meyer should have A)called before showing up to a place of business on a Sunday. B)if called should have talked to the owner. to see if he had the piece and then if he was willing to sell it. If that was his business to wait around on a sunday to find out if something was for sale that is his own fault. I have worked with this dealer for many years. Very smart and they know what they are talking about. Will give you the shirt off their back most of the time. A bit of advice. A little bit of preparation and getting to know will get you farther along that running and trying to buy. Only my 2 cents.

I"ve run into places where "everything is for sale" and it was OK to look around and bring to attention of someone to price or maybe decline to sell - and I"ve had things that were "for sale" overpriced so as to be not for sale, but never had to wait 2 hours to find out. At least you are lucky in one area - my wife would have given them a piece of her mind after no more than 15 minutes. Sounds like seller or more likely the kids representing him have issues. Its really too bad as everyone on here is a collector - so if you were referred to this place, I would have assumed they would be collector friendly - but they could just as easily priced at 2 or 3 times value.

I think you better restate your story so you get it straight, Mr. Meyer. We know what we have there amongst more than one of us. All we need to do sometimes is talk with the owner (my dad) or one of my other brothers to know. We collect tractors, you saw that when you went to my dad's place. As collectors of Oliver tractors and memorabilia, there were a lot of things you have and keep because you know what things are and what they are for. I know that they are going to be used when we do restorations of later projects. Just because they are not on something now doesn't mean they are for sale. There are things that we sell and some we don't. The hard to come by stuff we usually keep for our own stuff. We sell new parts and equipment still so we are not just a "Old Junk Yard", only part of it is our parts area. I am sorry you feel the way you do about not being able to get what you want, but there are things you wouldn't part with yourself, is there. Remember that next time you talk with people and before you cut them down here. I do appreciate you asking and stopping, but sometimes things are not for sale.

I had somthing like that happen to me at a yard one day, I found a near new or was new JD 620 manifold. it still had paint and not a sign of carbon, it had both pieces plus the heat valve.the owner said, where did you find that? I told him and he said it wasnt for sale, I said that I couldnt believe that he has a tractor salvage yard and this part was not for sale, I needed it bad, he said to put it back where I found it, I thought for a while and seeing that the yard was muddy , it was cold and I was about out of patience, I told him that he could sell it or he could pay his yard help to put it back. He then gladly to my $150 for a genuine JD part.
