My grandpa has an oliver crawler that I got running this year, but it has no serial plate. He thinks it is an oc3,but there is no serial plate.Its painted oliver green(original condition,never repainted).My question is, is there any way to tell an oc3 from an HG? Thanks for any advise.

I've got no arguments with what's been already stated - other then the color. I do not believe that all OC3s were yellow. I've got several factory photos of several versions of the OC3 that are NOT yellow. The photos are black & white - but regardless - it is clear there were some that were green and they are photos of production tractors, not prototypes. Also, my friends father used to sell them here locally - and sold some green ones, and I also know a guy whose grandad worked at the Cletrac factory who also states a few were green the first year. I hear claims often made about production runs of many types of equipment - about what was, or was never made. Never say never - it's hard to prove a negative. I just recently had a guy telling me off because he claims his production list says Chevrolet never made a diesel K5 Blazer with a manual shift. Problem is, I have one, and have had it since new in 83. Came right from the factory that way - as ordered. I've heard the same color arguments about green Deere 1010 dozers never existing - and they did. I worked on one new in 1960. Back to HGs and OC3s. At least in my area, they were a modern-day Ford Model T. They were all over the place, and parts got swapped between them all the time. So now - 50-60 years later? It stands to reason that many - and sometimes most parts may not be original.

thanks for all the info. I will try to get a good look at the crawler this weekend and get some engine numbers if that will help. In responce to someones question, no he did not buy it new

Earlier HGs are eay to tell the difference Front idlers have holes in them and a center flange that runs in the track,no water pump,steer levers are different larger starter just to name a few,But late HGs have water pumps and later front idlers but except for the last few made the way to tell is the final drive cover. HGs will have a one piece cover with a 3-4 inch bubble in the metal cover where the pinion bearing goes a OC3 will have a removeable pinion quail and that is were you fill your oil HG oil fill is on the final tube. No OC 3s were green from the Factory All were Yellow. Ive parted over a 100 HG and OC3s and still have 50-60 here and never seen a green OC so chances are if it looks like a OC it is a late HG and i'd like to have a dollar for every guy that say he had a OC and it was a HG most don't know the difference.

John I have two that i know off that were under 100 made one 60 something and one 80 something and both Yellow also mr Landis also told me years ago that All OCs were yellow BUT Dealers could have paint some green won't be first time that happen and maybe some dealer got green ones in the begining special order it was different back then as the very last ones made you could not tell from a HG

CH. This friend of mine father was a dealer and sold a fair number of them and he told me they were green the first year. There is also a collector not too far from here and he has a low serial number one and it is green and a later one and it is yellow. I looked at one this fall and it has IND on the serial number tag and it is yellow. The green one I looked at does not say IND on the serial number tag. Just though of this, why would you want a wide gauge in industrial as a general statement. I have a couple of other questions. I send you an e-mail. I guess we need to find someone that has a later 1951 or a 52 Oliver price book and see what the standard was. J.

I meant the last HGs you could not tell from OCs They were the same i believe at serial number 59GA724

This could be tough, did your grandfather purchase the crawler new? Next look at the engine. On the left side at the top of the block the model and serial number will be stamper there. On the right side behind the mag the date the engine was cast will be stamped. How about giving us those numbers to start with. Also if the front idlers are the original ones how are they put together? Start there. J.
