Hello,

As some of you may remember I had a problem with excessive blow-by in my oliver 1855 (with a 6-354 turbo charged perkins engine from Massy 750 combine), after only about 5 hours of usage on the overhaul. After removing the pistons, I found all of them to have cracked ring glands on the pistons and broken rings, along with broken rings. The overhaul kit was a maxiforce kit. Could I have gotten a bad batch of pistons? I do know that the kit was about $700 and the everywhere else that we looked were in the neighborhood of $1,200. Maybe a costly case of getting what I paid for? Has anyone else used maxiforce kits? What kinda luck have you had with them? Or could it have been caused by something else?

I got lucky and only had to replace 4 of the sleeves. I replaced them and all six pistons with parts from perkins. Put it together, and went straight from the shop to the field and chisel plowed about 10 acres with it to make sure it was broken in. No blow-by or any other problems at all now with about 15 hours of service on the engine now. Runs great and starts great even when it is cold.

Any input would be greatly appriciated.

Thanks

Did you get the right kit for the correct 354? Maxiforce is a leader in aftermarket kits for the other shade of green.

My step dad ordered the kit from place in Michigan. He gave them the information the engine (i.e. make, displacement, that it is turbocharged, number off of the block that is below the injector pump, and what it came out of). Could maybe we have gotten a kit for a naturally aspirated 6-354 perkins instead of a turbocharged 6-354?

Thanks
