We have an Oliver Super 55 gas version that we rebuilt the engine on a few years ago. Sometime it runs fine, other times the temperature gauge will spike hot then back to cold and continue that the entire time it runs. This was allowed to continue until it blew the head gasket. (Doh) Anyway my question is it seems like the thermostat in it is wrong, it is a stant replacement, seems to be the part number that everyone uses but by the way it looks with the housing it doesn't close off the bypass circuit when it is open like the manual says it should. Do we have the wrong housing or a wrong thermostat? Any ideas? I really don't want to blow a 2nd head gasket. It's not that much fun to take it apart.
Thanks for any advice, Nick

Take the thermostat out and test it by hot water and when replacing make sure the body is placed into the block. Sounds like the thermostat is upside down with the condions it causes.

I'm no expert at all, but your radiator cap also helps control the system's pressure buildup. Is that cap new? John
