Having read and re-read the manuals, it seems that later water pumps are improvements on earlier ones.
But they only loosely talk about backwards compatibility. I have a 58 Gas 550 [serial 67105-519] without power steering. Can I use a later water pump? Or do I just try to replace the exact one I have based on the casting number?

LAter pumps have a few changes in them. Also remember changes were made the next year (1959) when they went to the 155 cubic inch engine which meant there was a change in the water pump. They take a different gasket cause the bolt pattern to attach it is different. You are not dealing with a car. Your original water pump is of better quality than aftermarket replacement pumps. I would get me a rebuild kit and repair the pump you have. Probaly less money too. Questions?J

Great advice. Thank you. I will read the manual and try to find the correct rebuild kit. I may have questions once I get it out for inspection. Watch this space!

A quick update. I refilled the rad to flush it a bit more before the proposed vinegar treatment. Opening the engine tap only, and starting the engine lead to LOTS of water draining nicely from the crankcase. So, I guess my water pump is OK. I will put off the rebuild for another Winter. Or do you think I should open it up and check it, while I have the front and rad off? If so, what am I looking for?

Checked the thermostat. It opens OK but does not close completely. I will replace it next week. Noticed more rust than lime in the housing. Will vinegar cut that too?
