Hi, This is my snow-pushing tractor at one site. Hasn't done much work this year, so I went to start it the other day. Put a new battery on it because the old one was 3 years old and dead all the time (never had enough oomph to run the 6v starter either...from a 12v car battery). Got it started, runs a little and tries to die. That's normal for this tractor, until she gets warm you gotta be quick with that choke control, or you'll be having lots of fun up front with the crank.

Well, turns out that it runs fine for about 2 minutes, dies, and won't fire for nothing after that. I haven't done much in the way of troubleshooting yet, but it should've had plenty of gas (just dumped some in.) I suspect some sort of ignition system problem, though I didn't check it for spark after the warm-up. Or it could be a carb problem; this tractor tends to drip gas out of that area, right where the rubber hose comes around from the air cleaner.

It's unusual behavior that I'm not quite sure how to diagnose. Suggestions? May be a day or two before I get back to it; we've just resumed taking out corn. Not much left to do there, though.

Thanks
Dan

Sounds like lack of fuel to me. Had these symptoms on a tractor with a clogged fuel filter once. Does the tractor start after it sits for a while? If so, the fuel may be slowly trickling into the carb and then it had more gas to go. I would remove fuel line and make sure you have a good steady flow of fuel from fuel line. Had another tractor that leaked gas from the air cleaner hose like you describe. I replaced the needle and seat to cure this problem. Get the needle with the little rubber tip. And check your float to make sure it is good. Good Luck

Yep, works again after it cools off an hour or so. Family mechanic said it's probably a bad condensor or coil, maybe even the 6-12v conversion resistor going (and possibly burning the points) but this is all speculation just now.

So, you'd call this pretty much a fuel-line/carb problem? Because that fuel line used to leak gas at the valve. I had stuff water-faucet packing in there to fix that. But if it's dripping gas down by the air cleaner hose, wouldn't that mean that we're probably getting fuel to the carb? Just seems to me that we might be able to narrow this down to the carburetor. Hasn't been cleaned in the time I've had this tractor, so maybe she's due.

Sounds like a carb problem to me. I think theres a screen on the inlet elbow on the carb. Disconnect the line from the tank to the carb right at the elbow, open the valve on the tank and see if you
get a good stream. If you do, remove the screen,
very carefully, [its possible to squash the sides
of the threaded hole so you can't get the tube fitting back in} Then clean it out real good.
Connect it back together, open the valve, and remove the plug in the bottom of the carb see if you
get a good stream. If you have gas leaking around the air intake hose, you probrobly have a leaking
needle an seat. Sounds like an carb overhaul is
needed.. Start it up and if it quits after a few
minutes grab hold of a spark plug wire and try to start it again, If it bites you, the electrical
system is probrobly all right.
