I am looking at possibly doing some hay with a neighbor. I have the tools (Oliver of course)and haymow and he has the land. Any thoughts on how the expense and income should be split? He has several horses and I have one. May get one more. Not sure how much will keep and how much will sell. Any ideas?

I have a neighbor who retired and has a pure established 20 acre field of Alfalfa. I do all the work with my equipment and we split it 50-50. It's hardly worth my time at that but I enjoy it. He pays for fertilizer and pesticides/herbicides.

Any other split when you put your pencil to it doesn't pay economically without selling some at some premium prices. You can buy a lot of hay for the tankfuls of fuel it takes to make it.

For rowcrops cropsharing we do 3/5 for the farmer and 2/5 for the landowner. Fert&Chem costs are also divided the same. Landowner pays for lime. Farmer pays for seed, fuel, etc.

Ditto to what Old said, except farming has dropped off so much in this area, I was getting a lot of smaller fields for free before I stopped haying a couple of years ago. But 1/3 for landowner, 2/3 for the worker bee is standard, for a commercial situation.

Going rate in my area for doing hay is 1/3 to 2/3s. The guy that owns the land gets 1/3 of the bales the guy that is cutting, rakeing and baleing the hay gets 2/3 of the hay. Now thats if all the land owner does is have the land. If he hleos then that does/can change
