I hope someone can help me. I need help to i.d. a diesel tractor so I can get a manual for it. I have what I think are the right numbers of the frame: Model# 65-72005 ser# 172018-482 I think the first # is a 6 but it could be a 5 it has a front loader on it and has been painted about 8 times so the #`s are super hard to read. It looks like a White 2-44 more than a super 55 from the research I have done but I don`t know. Thanks for your help in advance.

Farmritch:
The first number that follows the dash (on those tractors that have five digits) indicates the Style of the tractor.    "7" is the number for an Industrial tractor with a non adjustable front axle.   You are correct, the second digit "1" for your tractor indicates a gas engine.   The last three digits is the sum of all of the choices for equipment that was installed on the tractor as it was built at the factory.   Note: that was how the tractor was as it left the factory, not necessarily how it is equipped today.

   Model 515 could be either a model 550 or a 2-44.

BA do you have a list of those options?
I'd love a list In going thru some sales info I figured most of it but some are not listed what does 515-71073 as a spec # tell you/me?
I know the 515 is 550
does the 7 in this one mean adjustable axle?
I notice the numbers change from model year to year and of course I know 1 is gas engine but what about 073???

this is on a 1973 2-44 which I don't believe you can tell from the serial or spec number weather it's a 2-44 or a 550 right?

It is a 550 tractor built in the middle of August 1966.

If you order your manual from the Floyd County Museum in Charles City, Iowa, Send them your serial number also, and they can give you the exact build date, and where it was shipped to, etc.

From the numbers that you listed, The model number: 65-72005, "65" is a 550, "7" means that it was built with an industrial front axle, "2" is diesel engine.

Serial Number: 172018-482: 172018 is the tractor serial number, it was built in 1966.  Number 482: is for a shuttle transmission.
