I just picked up the new issue of Vintage truck today, and there is an article about how basically the demise of Studebaker was the downfall of South Bend...What about OLIVER??? No mention of that...Plus, the photo they feature as the "former Studebaker powerplant" looks ALOT like the pics Ive seen of the former Oliver powerplant...Anyone else seen this? I know the Oliver powerplant is now home to Rose Fuel and Brick, and the article says this building is home to Belden Brick...Amazing coincidence?

First of all I personally went to look at those Oliver bldgs prior to demo and my friend owned the co. that did the work and the rumors we hear on the street about stuff going in the trash is pretty much BS. There is even today a large amount of NOS parts inventory around... nobody wants to let go of it or go look for it and as to the demise of SB indiana you can blame the Unions and our poor work ethic in this USA... if we would work.. it would still be here. my 2 cents worth !

Down fall to South Bend?
Not really, not till the 80'& 90's when Bendix,Raco,AM General (who still makes the Hummer in Mishawaka),Allied,Obrien Paints, Rockwell,& Dodge Mfg.all backed out the production business in the area Bendix (honeywell now?)and Am General are still here but in less strength
Am General took over the Military production of 2 1/2, 5 tons & Mail Jeeps M-715 and M-151's that Studebaker had started that went to Kaizer then Kaizer became AM General The Kaizer Big truck building had been a WW2 plant that was built to make Studebaker contracted engines for B-24's & B- 17's I knew people who got laid off from Oliver (White Farm),AM General & Bendix,Also Allied after they split from White, and never had an opportunity to draw a pension from either I was at AM for almost 13 years but drew pay from another company got to see the last M151's and Duce and a Half's,5 ton's 915's etc to roll off the assembly lines in South Bend But to say the closing of Studebaker killing South Bend /Mishawaka is like saying when International closed Fort Wayne died. South Bend is still alive & well but like most of our country we are loosing our manufacturing jobs and have faired better than a few other towns & cities I can think of

Any one know what Oliver built during the war??
I know Studebaker made weasels, and Duce and a half (rare to see in the states) and most of the production went to Russia we sent so many Trucks to Russia they tought the American word for truck was STUDEBAKER lol so the story goes I helped a little on a restoration of a Studebaker duce and a half that was found in a shed at the Studebaker proving grounds it's at the Auburn Military museam now on loan.
after the war my uncle drove trucks for Studebaker off the line to New York then on ships bound again for Russia & abroad

Rose Brick is a distributor for Belden Brick. Belden brick does not have anything in Indiana other than distributors. Rose brick did move into an old buiding of Oliver. It was really sad to hear how much old Oliver stuff was tossed in the trash hopper when these buildings were sold. I know this didn't really answer your question but hopefully it cleared some things up.
