The Oliver 550 power steering conversion. My Tractor was actually sold as a Cockshutt with Cockshutt colours, however it has an Oliver serial number. So dont let the red and yellow paint throw you off. I had a local farm equipment related machine shop cut the upper steering housing off at the base where it bolts onto the steering box. ( it is also the upper bearing retainer) They also cut off the steering shaft and made a key way into it. They then built a frame bracket to support the torque amplifier and steering column. To keep the water out of the box I use a cut off radiater hose over the bottom nose of the torque amplifier and sealed it with silicone where it butts up against the upper steering box bearing retainer which we had machined off. I purchased a Danfoss TAD 160 Torque amplifier, with a 6 inch steering column OTPB 150 witch bolts right onto the torque amplifier. This raises the steering wheel by about an inch from the original. They also provide a 14 inch steering wheel part number 3177. There was little extra room in order to make the metal gauge cover fit, however it fits and works like a charm. When I did this conversion 4 years ago my steering shaft was already worn badly, however I was not able to find a new one, so I cleaned and polished it sufficiently to make it work. Unfortunately it didnt last and by now the shaft and nut are beyond repair. To run this unit I mounted a 1983 GM cube van Diesel power steering pump above the generator using the existing fan belt to drive it. The generator sticks out past the hood slightly now to accommodate the new pump. Check out the attached picture. The tractor picture is just after paint, before the decals and loader etc are installed. 2002
