1600 OLIVER Steering question

I just bought my first Oliver, 1600 Gas NF, 1963 model, about 5000 hours. Just asked the question about running problems, and also need to ask about steering. I put a spinner on the steering wheel and then noticed that when I run the tractor in the straight line for a while, the spinner keeps going around in a counter-clockwise circle while I correct the steering to keep going straight ahead. I read something about that in this forum, but not sure I understood the fix needed or whether or not this is an "oughta fix" problem or "hafta fix" problem, i.e. dangerous. The front spindle and wheels (NF) get a fair amount of fluid leakage on them. Thanks.

First of all you need to turn the steering wheel to make up the fluid that leaks out of the front end. I also remember when the 1600 trtactors came out don't be talking farmers into spinners as they will never come back to the same place once they had made the turn. The reason for that is the unit has to leak a little to lubricate itsels. Same reason a 20 GPM pump does not pump GPM. At 5000 hours your leakage is probably past the minimum amount of what leakage was when it was new. Fix the front first. That is an easy job. More questions? J.

Thanks, J. When you say, "fix the front first," I assume you mean to fix the leaks? I don't have a service manual on it, so I'll need to get one, I guess, to do know where to start on that. Right now, I'd say that the steering wheel is making a complete counter-clockwise revolution in just a few minutes of steering correction. How do you suppose that compares to a unit that does not leak? I also see mentioned, and see parts advertised, to convert a Saginaw Steering Unit to Charlynn. I don't know what I have, but being a 1963, probably early model. Is this conversion kit out there because of this problem I've just asked about? Thanks. B
