I just bought my first Oliver, a 1600 Gas NF, 1963 model. After a couple day"s use, it started cutting out when trying to pull uphill or under load and sometimes even without a load if starting out in a higher gear. Once the problem quit after a cool down period; another time it did it cold but quit the problem after a warm up. Checked breather, plug wires, etc. and don"t see anything obvious. Temp gauage not working, but doesn"t seem to be overheating. Can"t find a pattern. Does this sound like carb trouble, or..?

If this has the Marvel carb on it you may have rust in the carb. I just went through this on a 550 and opened the carb to find a rust flake floating around in the float bowl. This carb is cast iron and a bit of water in bowl can cause rust flakes that break loose and foul the jet.

Check plugs for colour after working reasonably hard for a while.
Does choking (strangling in US?) help when the fault occurs?
You need to determine whether it is a fuel or ignition problem, but sounds as though it is more likely fuel related.
You say "trying" - does this mean it is OK once it gets going? - prolly slightly weak mixture?
Let us know what you find.
Regards, RAB

RAB, at first there were times when it only faultered when starting out from a dead stop after a turn-around at the end of row staying in higher gear(bush hogging) but could be coaxed to keep going by revving and clutching easy. Eventually, it got to where it wouldn't go under load (PTO) at all, or even pull itself uphill with no load unless in a low gear. After a cool down, it came around and seemed fine for the rest of that day. Next day, engine cold, same problem until after a warm up, opposite of day before. I didn't think to try choking when it was hot, but did cold. Didn't seem to help but I did adjust the fuel mixture some after the cold engine faultering, but not sure if that was the fix or not. In all cases, it will idle fine. Thanks!

Check the plugs. Sounds like they're fouled out to me. If it's got a bunch of hours on it, it may need to be overhauled some time.

I did my grandpa's 1600, got it running again last year after a complete overhaul and partial rebuild. Before we parked it it would constantly foul out the plugs, and then sput & sputter and backfire a lot. The tach was busted so I have no idea how many hours were on it, but I'd guess it had to be somewhere around 7-9,000.
