Do I need to use a lead additive for the unleaded gas to use in 1975 Oliver 550G? Thanks,

Kevin

For most all tractors, the answer is no. ESPECIALLY a tractor built in 1975. In the automotive industry 1975 was the first year for catalytic converters and they all had hardened valve seats. Tractors (most all of them anyway) had hardened valve seats long before that.

I use to listen to a guy on the radio ( a car mechanic) Jeff Brooks he told it like this.

when he was young if a car was having sticking valves what gas did you buy---- WHITE GAS.
White gas was UNLEADED gas.

supposedly after 1970 all engines in the US were made of Stellite and NO longer needed the lead as much for lubrication.

we believed like everyone that taking the lead out was a bad thing when it first happend. UNTIL we had to rebuild every carberator we had because the stinking addative stuck the jets solid when they sat over the winter one year.

I add 2 oz. of Marvel Mystery Oil to 5 gal. gas. I've been using this for years, and it actually cured some sticking valves in a Ford 2N.( It took a while ) I've been told those Fords have valve rotators and this freed them up supposedly.

Here is what works Re: Gasoline Lead additive for in reply to Kevin Roberson, 09-18-2006 07:09:42
Right after the only fuel available was NO lead gas I started having valve problems with old engines. These were in tractors trucks and such that were used with heavy loads. What I did was to put a handful of pure lead shot like OO buck -.36 in or larger in the fuel tanks of these machines. Make sure that the shot you use is bigger than the fuel outlet port. This shot will roll around in the tank and wear off a little lead it is then asorbed by the fuel. This is a very SMALL amount but I stopped droping valves after I used this method. Now if you are not pulling this tractor hard in the field most likly you have little to worry about. Another help is if you get some grafite added motor oil and add about 1 oz per 5 gal fuel this will help lube the valves. The lead shot also helps keep the tank clean by stiring up any sediment or water into the fuel so that the dirt can be removed by the glass bowl and fuel filters. In diesel tanks this will also kill any diesel microbes that may try to breed in your fuel. You could also make these by casting a short lead rod with an steel core so they could be taken out of the tank with a pick up magnet if you needed to. ;))

PS I have no sceintific proof but this seems to work for me.

Only if you want to wast your money. Only thing that stuff is good for is keeping a company going, to tell the truth about the stuff its a scam and it doesn't even have any lead in it in the first place.
