I posted a few days ago about my Oliver 550 to determine if it was an early or late model. I looked up the numbers behind the starter and they are: Top number 180220 L, middle number 159002 A, and bottom number 5289. What can be determined from these numbers? thanks, Jerry

The top number 180220 L is the Waukesha part number for the crankcase casting. The second number 159 002 A is the Oliver part number for the crankcase casting. Note this number is the casting number prior to machining & drilling, installation of the main bearing caps and installation of the front camshaft bearing.   For a crankcase as sold by the Repair Dept the "A" letter following the part number is "AS" indicating all of the above has been included or an assembly.

The last number is the date that the crankcase casting was poured at the foundry at Charles City. Your's was poured on May 28, 1959. It was then shipped to Waukesha, completed as a running engine and shipped back to the plant for installation in your tractor. A time laspe from three weeks to two months. There is a flat machined area (for the support of the front of the fuel tank) on the rear of the crankcase.  There is a date stamped for the month and year when the engine was assembled in that area.
