Noisy PTO when turning

A friend of mine used to own the 1650 gasser that I now have and he replaced it with a 1655. He put a new PTO in the 1650 but he noticed that with both of these tractors the PTO is noisy when he turns with a haybine or baler. When he goes straight there isn't a noise. I have run a brush hog and that is fine. What would make the "shuttering" noise when he turns?

Most of the problems with drivelines as you turn are incorrect drawbar length, or improper timing of the U-joints. The yokes have to be timed with the adjacent yokes in line with each other. So the inner two yokes are in the same plane, and ditto the outer ones. If they are out of time they will set up some horrible vibrations.

They also have to be at the approximate same angle, so the drawbar pin has to be (I think) 14-20" from the end of the PTO shaft on the tractor.

I'd say it is probably the haybine or the balers PTO shaft that is making the noise, not the tractor. When I used to have a haybine(before my discmower) it would make a racket when turning and so does my old square baler.

Well that kind of makes sense. Somebody shortened the drawbar on the square baler for whatever reason. The kicker is that he can run the haybine or baler on his Belarus or MF 175 and they don't make the same rattle. Maybe there is a difference in where the PTO is located in respect to the drawbar with these two tractors? Just an idea...

I just re-read the original post, and I'm pretty sure the reason the PTO would growl on the baler and haybine, is probably because he didn't take the time to adjust the height of the center support bearing.

We've got a Massey 165 which is similar to the 175. The PTO is much lower on that and if he would leave the PTO at the same setting when he ran them with the Ollie, that would cause poor alignment and it would make noise.

On a similar note, we ussually have just one tractor that we do all of our hay mowing and baling with, so the PTO never has to messed with.(Massey 285) We did have to do some baling with the 165 once in a while if the PTO was out on the 285 or it had the duals on still from fall feildwork. The PTO is higher on that so it lines up fine with our 1600 (didn't run at the time) and our 1755 (used that to cut hay, but just didn't seem right for baling) We had to adjust the pto support, but after that it ran fine.

It Could be that the support bearing on the baler and haybine need to be adjusted for your tractor, to make it a straighter line.

Otherwise look under your tractor at the drawbar, it may need to be pulled out and made a little longer.
