There is a howling noise when the tractor just starts to move when letting out the clutch, sounds like an unlubricated pilot bushing or some other bushing. Once the tractor is moving clutch all the way out noise stops.

Mine does it too. I restored my 77 about 5 years ago, and kicked myself in the (you know what) for not replacing the throw out bearing when I had it appart!!! It seems to make the noise cold, once I run the tractor and it warms up it seems to go away..I have come to the conclusion to just live with it until something breaks...

Most likely it is the pilot bearing and you have an older 77 that still has the bushing instead of the ball bearing pilot bearing. Don't laugh, but the first fix would be to get in there. It worked 90% of the time , However there is a trick to it. More questions? A bad Throw out bearing will make a noise as you push on the clutch and the bearing hits the release levers on the pressure plate. A bad pilot bearing on those makes the noise when the clutch is in the released position? Questions? J I will try to send you an e-mail.

Could be the trhow out bearing or a couple other things. Both of my 77s do that some and have since I got them. So far its just there and I don't worry about it
