I found a number on what I was told is a 55. The number D100 470A is located near the shift lever. Is this the serial number? It does not match anything listed anywhere for the 55, or what is it?

This is going to be a real quick smart answer. When the hydraulic system was revised for the 1957 model year you had casting numbers in the 100 470A neighborhood. I go by memory but if I remember correctly the hydraulic filter part number was 100 476AS. Now I said memory and it has been 30 years since I did this so I do make mistakes. Did you look for a serial number tag on the clutch housing? How about some casting numbers from behind the starter on the block? Or if all else fails how about a picture? J.

Well, you can rule out a 55, there aren't any. There are Super 55s and 550s. The serial number plate should be on the frame near the driver's left knee when sitting on the tractor. Got a picture you could post?

There is a "55". When Handwerk Bros in Neffs, Pa. (a former Oliver & White dealer) had their auction approx. 4 months ago they had one there. I also thought there was no such thing but I asked the owner and he said it was a 55, not a Super 55.

I don't doubt your story, but I doubt the person that says they had one. I have just about all of the books concerning Oliver I can get my hands on. There has never been a mention of a 55. The only similar tractor prior to the Super 55 was the XO-67 experimental tractor, only six were built in 1953. A pilot run of 300 Super 55s was made in 1954, introducing the Super series. When someone says they have a 55, I take it they mean Super 55. There is one book,Oliver Photographic HIstory by April Halberstadt that mentions an Oliver 55 (page 106), but the photo clearly shows the decal reading Super 55.

Nope, this was a 55, not a Super 55. Decals on sides said "Oliver 55". Leonard Handwerk, the former owner, was a Oliver & White mechanic from the late 1950's until recently when he retired & sold out. I've known him for about 18 yrs. He probably knows as much or more about Olivers as John Schwiebert does. He definately knows what he had. He had to retire due to health reasons. I tried to talk him into posting on here but he is very "old school" & wants nothing to do with computers. The neighbor also worked for him & confirmed it was a 55 & not a Super 55.

I would love to see an article in either HPOCA or Oliver Heritage on that one. That would definately be a real piece of history. That kind of information needs to be documented. I can find no other reference on about that tractor.

Would like to see some pictures and serial numbers.Always heard the super 55 came out to compete against the fords as a new tractor sharing same engine as super 66. willing to learn and will accept proof but not say so. Have a few super 55's in my area and most call them a 55.

Do you mean a (model) 55? Or a (year) '55?

I'm sure you know that a 55 / S55 / 550 all had a distinctive look - a low-profile utility style that seems to be unique in the Oliver family.

If that number is cast, I would guess it is a casting (mold) number. It doesn't look like any Oliver s/n I've ever seen, but that's not saying much!

If the number is stamped / etched, it could be anyone's guess.

Nathaniel
