I was brush hogging and the PTO stopped. Now the tractor won't go into gear unless at very low rpm and a lot of grinding. I removed the PTO housing and the three bolts. Wouldn't budge. I removed the four bolts holding the whole PTO assy. It still won't come out. What do I do?

You never know who or how someone put it back togather in the past. If after you removed the three bolts that hold bearing and shaft in place, and you can't move it at all, you need more force. If you moved it some you will need to turn shaft and aline the splines. I have had some that were hung up realy tight and took real force with a long bar to break it loose. If the tractor set out side for a long time with a bad shifter boot and the transmision filled up with water rust could be a factor. Good luck!

I also had an 1850 that I couldn't line up the splines, or so I thought, made several trips to the dealer to talk to him and look at diagrams. When I realy got tough with a slide hammer and got it out I found that the engine must have been out of the tractor for a long time with the PTO shaft slid back in place, as for a foot back from the front of the shaft it was rusted bad. I cleaned it real good with a knoted wire wheel and sand paper and it slid in and out real easy. Just shows that short cuts get paid for later.

I think you right about the shaft being broke and stuck. Take the cover off the top of the tranny. That will give you a better view. If you have hydraulics you have a problem because the hydraulic unit doesn't come off until the PTO shaft has been removed. Good luck.

I loosened the coupling at the transmission and slid it forward. Couldn't see any break. Next I removed the bolts on the bell housing and slid it back. I pulled on the PTO clutch at the rear and everything slid out six inches.

At the engine clutch, the transmission & PTO shaft had slid back six inches. The break is 1/2 in. back into the transmission shaft. I can feel it with my finger. The splined end of the PTO shaft is still in the clutch or flywheel.

The engine has to come out and the PTO shaft cut. Now I'll need some used parts.
