I have just purchased a 1958 770 gas. The prior owner was the original owner and it is a well maintained, running unit. I was reviewing the manual and it suggests all kinds of oils/additives. My question is what are the "modern" oils that are recommended in the trans, pto, and engine? I have heard that some switch to straight modern hydro fluid but I hate to make a switch without some well seasoned advice. Also, the manual suggests flushing the trans with kerosene; is this still a recommended practice? One more, any idea what a good spark plug number is which is still availible?

After looking at the other posts it looks like I need 10/30 given the fact that I have the power booster. Mr. Schwiebert, you are to be commended for your extensive support on this page...I rarely saw a post that was not answered by you!

Thanks for the thoughts. I do not have the manual here at work but I was thinking that the recommended oil was a lot lighter than 80/90...any recommendations for the engine oil wts? I think 10/30 and 20w were the suggestions but I am curious. Thanks again

Well the oil additive has not been available for over 30 years. 80-90 gear oil will well in the transmission and also the PTO. Check plug is on the right side and it a 3/8 pipe plug. Capacity for the transmission and final drive is 4-1/2 gallon or a little more if the the tractor has either a power booster or front mounted belt pulley. There is one fill plug by the gear shift lever. If you get more than say 6 gallon out, the seals on the hydraulic pump are leaking. If it was me to keep it simple what ever API classified engine oil you use I would also use that in the hydraulic unit. Also change the hydraulic filter. Hope that helps. Questions? J.
