Alternator Recommendations for 88 with Side Curtai

My 88 RC gas was converted to 12V negative ground with alternator by a previous owner. I've acquired a set of side curtains for it, but the current alternator is too large to allow the right side to fit. Anyone have any recommendations for alternators that would be smaller in diameter and still put out enough juice for the tractor?

The current alternator is a Delco Remy that uses two wires coming in from the old harness. One goes to the BAT terminal on the alternator, and then to the #1 alternator terminal. The second wire in goes to the #2 alternator terminal only. I've not chased down the harness wires to know where they come from, but there is a switch on the dash that must be flipped on for the alternator to charge.

Thanks for the help!

I saw a neat way to eliminate this problem. The altenator was pushed and locked in the up position and a spring or positive idler pully pushing on the outside of the belt. With this arrangment both will be inside and the side panels will fit with no problem.

I don't think it's so much the alternator's fault as it is the location. Most alternators are pretty much the same size and the delco sure is nice when you have to replace it...you can buy one off the shelf at any store. I'd look into making brackets that move it out of the way. I've even seen people reverse them and mount them facing the engine

I've got a 1 wire 12v alternator on my 1950 88 Row Crop and I've got the side curtains on it. I'd be glad to send you a pictures of the homemade bracket. I think it's a standard GM type frame.

Our 77 had the same deal when we got it. It had a regular size delco and stuck out too far. I replaced it with a newer style delco, I think it might be called an "iceberg", it is quite a bit smaller but still stuck out a little. So I made a bracket that comes off of the bolts for the thermostat housing and turned the alternator over so the pivot is at the top. This let it set up and in enough to clear the side panel.

I had the alternator shop convert it to a one wire setup and it works perfect. WB.
