I have 1963 550. It has factory an (I belive it is factory) auxilliary hydraulic control. I have never used the auxilliary hydraulics, however, I just purchased a log splitter which runs off of the tractor hydraulics so I want to now start using it. I want to replace the existing hydraulic connectors with quick release ones. The issue is this. There seems to be 3 ports off of this Vickers unit. 2 have hoses that run to the back of the tractor to which you would connect implement hydraulics to. I don"t know what the other is for. Is anyone familiar with this? If so, can you explain them to me?

Thanks.

MT

I think my 550 external hydraulics is hosed up the same as yours. Mine employs galvanised joints and T's to which the 4 rubber hoses are attached with that valve between them. I open the valve (same garden tap top) to supply 2 pipes that go to the front trip loader, and close it to use the rear hoses. It looks liike a mess of pipes but it works well. Do you want me to email a photo?
My valve leaks from around the top stem, so I need to replace it.

Chris; A picture of your setup would be greatly appreciated. I hope to be replacing the hoses this weekend so that I can start using the log splitter (I don't want to be splitting with an axe in this heat!) My email address is [email protected]

Thanks.

The way you have explained it I am guessing you mean the pipe plug. If so you need to hook a hose in there when using a single acting cylinder. How big is the cylinder on your splitter? Questions? J.

Thanks for replying. I believe you are right. I believe that it is the pipe plug. Currently, there is a hose coming out of it and (I believe) it tees into one of the other lines. On that hose, there is what looks like a manual valve with a handle on it similar looking to what you would find on a garden hose tap. I am not sure of the purpose of it, or if that set up is original. Any ideas?

The cylinder on the splitter is pretty big. I will have to measure it when I get home. The previous owner used it with his small Ford.

Thanks again.

If you are using a single acting cylinder, which means it only has hydraulic pressure on one side, thus it would have only one hose, then hook the hose to the other coupler. IE not the one with the valve. Then open the valve.

If you are using a double acting cylinder, ie two hoses to it, then close the valve.

(I"m jealous, I need to make a setup like this for mine, just haven"t gotten it done yet>)
