Well, I have an update on the hydraulics questions I had for a 1955 S55. The original thread is a few pages back now, so I thought I'd give an update and see what the general consensus is. I'm in the process of purchasing the tractor, but the rear (3-pt) hydraulics don't want to lift. I'm looking for possible problems and their solutions with an estimated price to fix this workhorse!

Here's what I've gathered so far:
1. It's a 1955 S55 GAS (SN 25-0100)
2. It has a Wagner fully hydraulic loader w/ front-mounted pump and seperate reservoir. Works great!
3. Has power steering with cylinders that assist the rods (externally), not the internal worm drive model. This works great as well!
4. It has the updated (late S55/550 model) hydraulic cover with the front-mounted filter can and no draft control lever.
5. The rear hydraulics will work occassionally "if you fiddle with it a bit" (according to the previous owner).
6. Aux. hydraulics have a pressure reading of 80psi.

From what we've discussed before (before I got the pressure reading), we were thinking it was either:
A. Stuck/Sticky Over Pressure Valve
B. Gummed up/blocked aux control valve/flow splitter
C. Weak pump in need of a $300 pump rebuild.

Any one else have any thoughts, questions, or suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Do you know how many hours? Seems to me that if the pump hasn't been rebuilt, it most likely has worn vanes not putting out the best pressure. When you order a rebuild kit you probably know that you get the whole center section as one unit. You can not substitute. The end piece may need to be precission ground, it will most likely have some groving on the surface. Sounds like a good deal if everything else is in good shape. I can't remember if you mentioned if it had a swinging draw bar, because those are selling for $300-400 on ebay I think. One more note. If you rebuild your pump be sure to check the thickness of the centre block. I am guessing, and maybe someone else can confirm, that the later top had the bigger pump. The only difference seems to be the thickness of that centre piece. So, you may not be able to go by the serial number when ordering the parts since yours has been updated.

Super 55,

I was wondering if you knew where those updated hydraulic covers were filled from. Do you unscrew the base where the dipstick is to fill from, or is there another area that I'm missing.

Looks like I'm taking the plunge and putting a deposit down on the tractor. Wish me luck! Now I'm really going to have to call and get one of those manuals.

Thanks again for all the help.

Yeah... the dipstick hole is the filler hole for the hydraulic, the cap without the stick is the transmission filler hole. To check the transmission oil level there is a pipe plug at the rear rear of the final drive part of the frame, on the upper right-hand side. I suggest you get a parts manual, operators manual and shop manual. Well worth the expense if you like to putter around on the tractors yourself. I suggest getting them from Floyd County Historical Society, or keep an eye on ebay.

Ok. So which is the best resource? I&T, Information Book, or the parts book?

Thanks,
Justin

I I&T is not that good compared to the original shop manual. The I & T is about $20 and the shop reproduction is about $150. The parts book is really handy if you have to do a lot of restoration. I picked up an original for about $35 on ebay and not sure what Floyd County charges.
