I was just wondering if anyone out there has a 550 diesel if they have to use the preheater to get it started. I am beginning to believe some Oliver Diesels are harder to start than others. I guess im just curious.

Okay, I just have to think of a way to keep a load on it for 15 more hours. I use it to get logs from the woods, and haul the trailer full of wood. I hope things get better, cause I love the tractor. Dont remember the name of the parts, but I will also clean the power cells out. I havent got it back since they rebuilt the starter, and fixed the timing so Im curious on how it starts, and if the smoke has cleared a little. I just need to keep looking positive. One thing though wife is ready to kill me. Can"t stand the tractor and the money put into it. LOL Thats Life!

I plowed and Disked with it, also brush cut some. About 2 to 3 hours of a decent load with the plow. Probably a total of around 5 hours after rebuild. Nothing was done on the head or valves. It was a NOS Rebuilt kit with 3 3/4 sleeves and pistons, they did use a 4" Head gasket, they said that way it wouldnt cause any problems with a smaller gasket. It will smoke when trying to start it, can be heavy. They did rebuild the starter for the one they put on there was junk, and said the timing was a little off. But still wont start right away. Once started smokes for a few minutes then clears up and doesnt smoke at all, also under heavy load wont smoke. Nor is there a miss anywhere.

If it is 3-3/4 inch bore it is not a NOS kit. Oliver never had a 3-3/4 kit for them. Personally in a diesel you couldn't run fast enough to give me a set of them for a diesel. Also if your head gasket has a much bigger hole, you loose compression in that space and remember they start on compression. If you are getting a lot of smoke when starting I would say your timing is off more than a little bit or you are short on compression. You need at least 20 hours to break it in and by all means keep a good load on it. Also think about putting a single pin in the block to stop your leak. Piece of cake. Questions? J.

I read about your post with the pin hole leak. First thing, have you used it enough to seat the rings? Second what did they do to the head? What did they use for sleeves and pistons? Do you get smoke out of the exhaust when you try to start it/ Get back with me but I will be gone after 7:00 A. M. tomorrow and will not be back till Friday Morning. J.
