Hello all, I posted this inquiry on the general discussion board and was pointed in this direction. I'm interested in learning more about the Cle-trac. Years made, etc. Is there a geographical location they are found mostly? Out west, midwest, eastern...Thanks for the help!
Don ( Ohio )

IN 1952 DURING A FOREST FIRE SEASON THAT ENCOMPASSED THE CUMBERLAND MOUNTAIN CHAIN, AMONG MOST OF THE EASTERN MOUNTAINS, I WAS PLACED ON ACTIVE DUTY FROM THE TENNESSEE TECH ARMY ROTC UNIT. (THAT'S A WHOLE OTHER STORY) A STINKING NEW OLIVER CLE TRAC DOZER WAS PLACED AT OUR DISPOSAL. I SPENT ONE LONG NIGHT CLEARING FIRE TRAILS. IF MY MEMORY SERVES ME RIGHT, IT HAD COMBINED TRACK CLUTCH LEVERS (NO PEDALS) THEY WERE AIR BOOSTED AND VERY EASY TO USE.I THINK IT HAD A BUDA DIESEL AND A VERY POWERFUL ONE. I DON'T REMEMBER THE MODEL BUT IT WAS CAT D6 SIZED. THE BLADE WAS HYDRAULIC, ALSO VERY EASY TO USE.

I've seen several here in South Dakota. Like most equipment after the war, the jet age was right around the corner so most things were already obsolete. The B17 was very impressive but obsolete in comparison to the B29. Sherman tanks had their turrets removed and sold to farmers as tractors. Cletracs were also sold as surplus.

Cletrac made crawlers from 1916 until 1944, in 44 Oliver purchased the company. Go to one of the book stores and hit cletrac there are several books. Call me @ 319 827 6140 if you want to purchase one or visit.

As an information source try "Endless Tracks in The Woods", by James A. Young. I am sure there are others but that does have a fair amount on Cletracs.
Regarding demographics, I can't help much, we didn't get too far off the farm in those days! I live in SE PA and they were used a lot by potatoe farmers (HG-68) some in orchards and we had one for hill side work. They were great for cultivating.
Some Mennonites, depending on the elders, also used them where they could not use rubber tired tractors. Most of the sale adds I see today seem to be East of the Miss, not to slight Albert who I think is in Iowa.
