Is an 880 Oliver a good tractor?

I am looking at an 880 Oliver with a 1610 Oliver loader. Any positive or negative experiences with these? Is there anything out of the ordinary I should check on the tractor before buying? The seller said it never had P.S. but it says Power Steering on the steering wheel. Is it possible the PS pump was removed? Is $3800 a fair price for average condition or better with new Goodyear rears?

I have an Oliver 770 gas with a 1610 loader. My dad bought it new and farmed with it as his main tractor for several years (did not have the loader at that time). I have used it for real farm work and as a utility tractor. It has been a very good tractor with little trouble.
If it has power steering on the steering wheel I would suspect that either the steering wheel (or emblem) has been replaced, or the power steering has been removed. The early units, like mine, had the power steering pump mounted to the back of the generator. At one time they were quite expensive to fix, don't know about now. I recommend that you get power steering on it if you are going to use it with the loader. Factor the cost of adding power steering into the price.
Mine also has the power booster (a two speed power shift) that is a real nice feature to have also.
The 770s and 880s are great tractors. Good luck.

It may not be a bad price for a loader tractor. I would install a power steering unit if you plan to use the loader. Put it through all the gears under load, if possible, to check for excessive wear. Also check the hydralic fluid. The boots tend to dry rot and allow water to seep into the system. This has cause many a system to freeze up, causing damage. It is a very dependable unit with good power. Good luck.

The 880 is a very good tractor.Both gas and diesel are easy to maintain and operate.Price varys by what part of the country you live in and a few other things you failed to tell us.Is it gas or diesel?Dual hydraulic levers or single,wide front or narrow?Is the loader in good shape or is it welded up and repaired in alot of spots?The 880 also has a torque and the teeth in the clutches will wear and cause the tranny to kick out in the lower gears not to worry the clutch plates cost less than 100 (takes two).By the way I paid $2100 for a late model gas good shape and purrs like a kitten.
