My 1950 770 was in need of a transmission and rear differential overhaul. After a complete disassembly, I discovered that the countershaft was so loose I could move it up and down in the bearings. This was obviously the clunk I heard especially in 6th gear. Also ring gear was missing 3 teeth and pinion was galled bad.I got a good used ring and pinion (not a match set), all new bearings and seals, put it all back together and was careful to make sure all gears were in correctly (I had a manual). Upon my test drive all gears were okay, but in 1st and 3rd, I have a noise, "click, click, click," at gear speed. It's the loudest in 3rd although I can hear it in 1st. I've noticed that the gear shift does not detent as deep in 1st and 3rd like the rest of the gears. I should mention that I did not remove the shifter railer. I took off the hydrolic unit again and I don't see any gear damage. I also don't see anything out of place. After the rebuild, I should say it's much improved and the horrible clunk is gone, but it's disheartening that I ended up with a new noise. This noise was not there before, and the shifter did detent deeper into 1st and 3rd. Any ideas? Could that countershaft being that loose wore a gear out of round? Please help. Thank you, John, Ohio
